Not the Patio Party Lights: Brake Service Light

Cause for Celebration?

Some lights are cause for a celebration, such as the welcoming twinkle of a friend’s patio party lights greeting you for a backyard cookout. When you see your vehicle’s brake service light, however, you don’t typically think of it as a party light. Even so, perhaps you can at least take comfort in knowing that you have useful information that warns you of an issue. This will allow you to seek attention before your automobile sustains further damage or you experience brake failure. To learn more about the brake service light and brake repair, count on the ASE-certified technicians at Transportation Repair in Logan, Utah.

Potential Underlying Causes

Noticing the illuminated brake service lamp may feel confusing because the warning doesn’t tell you specifically what’s wrong with your car. However, you don’t have to worry when you bring your vehicle to us. We’ll identify the exact issue once we check your braking system. Until then, we’re glad to share some of the more common underlying causes. Often, the culprit is the emergency brake that has been left engaged. When you start the auto and attempt to drive without disengaging the brake, the light will remind you. If this is not the issue, it’s possible that the parking brake actually needs adjusting. Once it’s properly calibrated, your car will no longer have trouble “detecting” when the brake is on or off. Also, you may not have enough hydraulic force to allow for proper brake function. One problem could be a low fluid level. If this is a recurring situation, it’s evident that your braking system has a leak. We’ll need to find and fix it. If someone has attempted a repair without bleeding the brake lines, you could potentially have air bubbles in the fluid as well. Finally, you could have worn brake pads that need replacing. As durable as they are, pads don’t last forever. Once they wear down below 2/32″, they’re no longer safe to use and must be changed.
