Auto Repair and Your Summer Road Trip Prep

Let the Good Times Roll

Summer trips are much better if your car does not break down along the way. It can be a terrible feeling to be stranded on the side of the road, in an unfamiliar place, with car troubles that you did not expect, especially if they could have been avoided. The disappointment and frustration due to precious vacation time lost and unexpected expenses can change your feelings of summer bliss to summer stress. Luckily, with a little bit of preparation and car care maintenance, the experts at Transportation Repair, in Logan, Utah, can help you with your auto repairs!

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth A Pound of Cure

Most of what needs to be checked on your car can be done relatively quickly and often visually.
A benefit of having your car evaluated by a trusted auto professional is that they can often spot possible other problems brewing, too, and can do auto repairs before they become major problems. Here are a few things to check before your next trip:

  • Tires – make sure the tread is deep enough, there are no cuts or gauges, and the tire pressure is correct. (If you insert an upside down quarter into the tread and you see George Washington’s head, it is time for new tires. And, if you need to add more air to your tires they should be cool. Fill them to the amount listed in the manual or your door jam – not what is listed on the outside of the tire.)
  • Brakes – if you hear them grinding or feel a vibration, you may need to have your brakes inspected.
  • Fluids – top off oil, coolant, brake, power steering, and windshield wiper fluids
  • Wiper blades – if wipers streak or fail it is time for a new set
  • Battery Test – make sure the battery cables are clean and tight
  • Belts and Hoses – belts can become frayed, cracked and glazed. Drive belts are normally replaced every 60,000 miles.
  • A/C system – if the system seems warmer than usual have both the system and cabin filter checked
  • Emergency Kit – it never hurts to have a flashlight, duct tape, booster cables and first aid kit on hand, just in case
